Mohegan Sun casino seeking 300 dealers

Times-Leader, Friday, January 29, 2010 at 1:39:46 AM

The casino Thursday said it will hire 500, and more than half of them will be in the table games department. More than a 1,000 people now work at the casino/racetrack.

"We're looking at probably 300 dealers," said chief executive Bobby Soper.

The games that include blackjack, poker, craps, roulette and baccarat are expected to be in place by the summer to complement the casino's slot machines, he said. The state legalized the games earlier this month as a way to generate much needed revenue and create jobs.

Celebs turn out for Mohegan Sun Casino opening gala

Hartford Courant, Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 2:09:23 PM

Television stars got a chance to show off some of their other talents Saturday, from poker to fiddlin', as part of the Mohegan Sun's weekend gala for its new Casino of the Wind.

Tracy Morgan of "30 Rock" showcased his poker expertise with a straight flush on the one of his first hands, while James Denton of " Desperate Housewives" fame did his Tennessee roots proud with some standing-ovation-worthy guitar playing.

"I'm from Nashville, so pluckin' just comes naturally," said Denton, who, with the rest of The Band From TV, wowed the crowds at two shows with their singing and musical expertise.

Jessica Szohr and Matthew Settle from " Gossip Girl," married couple Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin -- who both did gigs on "Dancing With The Stars" -- pro wrestler and " Dancing With the Stars" alum Stacy Keibler, along with Connecticut native Becki Newton from " Ugly Betty," all juggled red-carpet and VIP duties Saturday with just hanging out with the regular folks.

Mohegan Sun delays $734 million expansion

Las Vegas Review-Journal, Monday, September 29, 2008 at 12:04:27 PM

The delay of a $734 million expansion at the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut says as much about the economic state of the gaming industry as the Aug. 1 announcement by Boyd Gaming Corp. that it was halting construction of the $4.8 billion Echelon.

Financially, all is not well.

Deutsche Bank analyst Andrew Zarnett thought the Mohegan Tribe made a wise move in pushing back construction of a 922-room hotel tower and House of Blues theater by at least a year. He had a similar reaction when Boyd put the brakes on Echelon.

"This suspension is likely to last longer due to deteriorating industry fundamentals along with the need to potentially redo bank and bond covenants," Zarnett told investors.

Poker returns to Mohegan Sun

Patriot-Ledger, Tuesday, September 02, 2008 at 10:41:57 AM

Uncasville, Connecticut--Before Bill Burton could write a book about playing Texas Hold 'Em, the New Britain, Conn., resident went to Mohegan Sun's poker room.

It was 2000 and poker's popularity had yet to explode.

Then, about five years ago, it was all over. The Connecticut casino had shut its 54-table room on the brink of a boom that would bring the game onto the nation's television screens, Web sites and bookshelves.

At the time, Mitchell Etess, then the casino's executive vice president of marketing, said Mohegan Sun operators felt "the poker market isn't growing" and that the casino could see a bigger profit by converting the poker area into slot machines.

About: Sol Toro Tequila Grill
“Over the past five years, both my wife and I have become very passionate about food preparation, the many different flavors that can be encountered with the use of different ingredients and cooking techniques.

It was our 25th wedding anniversary and we wanted to go good restaurant for dinner. My daughter had told us about SolToro at the Mohegan Sun. She was very adamant about how excellent the food was. So for me and my wife it was a no brainer and a “must do” for our anniversary. When we first arrived we were impressed with the atmosphere, the aromas and the fact that there was a Mariachi band. We waited roughly 5 or 6 minutes to be seated and were seated at the tables along the wall to the left of the entrance.

The seating was a little tight. The tables were very close together with only enough room to get through them to reach the bench seat against the wall. Both patrons on either side were very pleasant, but a little close for me. We could hear every word of their conversations.

The waiter showed up to take our drink order and we had waited long enough to go over the menu and were able to ordered our appetizers and entrées as well. Unfortunately at that same time the Mariachi band had moved to the table behind us and it was difficult to hear what the waiter was saying and also for him to hear us, which may have attributed to my wife getting the wrong order, but more on that later.

We had ordered the Chips and Salsa and also the Tableside Guacamole. I had actually ordered the guacamole because my wife wasn’t that fond of guacamole dip until that night. She absolutely loved it, especially the fact that it was prepared right at the table. Both appetizers were absolutely wonderful. She wants me to make the guacamole for the Super Bowl game (Patriots vs. Giants).

For our entrées I had ordered the Grilled Sirloin Fajitas and my wife had ordered the Chicken BBQ Tacos. The entrée came out and they had the wrong order for my wife, they had brought her a Chicken Fajitas plate. I had watched the waiter write down “Chicken Tacos” on his order slip but some how the order had been confused in the kitchen. The Chicken Fajitas plate was taken away and her proper order was brought to her. She questioned why the corn tortillas had not been cooked. It appeared that the kitchen in their haste to recover the order just threw the chicken corn mixture into raw corn tortillas and served the plate. My wife tried a bite and found it difficult to eat. She only ate the remaining filling in two of the tacos. My fajitas were, well let me break it down. The beef was ok, it could have used more spice, a couple of pieces were burnt but over all it was good. The peppers and onions under the beef were over cooked and soggy, like they had been sitting for a while before they were served. The plate was warm, not hot like most fajitas dishes are served. Both of us were disappointed with the entrées.

We next ordered dessert, my wife ordered the Chipotle Brownie, I ordered the Orange Flan. The Flan was a pleasant visual when served. It had a cage of caramel surrounding it with a sprig of mint in the center of the Flan. The Flan was cook to perfection. The consistency was smooth with a wonder flavor, excellent.

The Chipotle Brownie was an unexpected delight. The brownie is served with a whipped cream topping with dibbles of dark chocolate sauce over the top there is also a scoop of cinnamon ice cream. The first bite was like a dark chocolate brownie with a whipped cream topping, and as you finish the bite and swallowed, the slight heat of the chipotle would fill you mouth, which made the dessert a wonderful experience. Both me and my wife were very pleased with the deserts.

The appetizers and the desserts were splendid. However the two entrées were not impressive and disappointing. If you’re into appetizers and desserts I would recommend SolToro Tequila Grill highly. As far as entrées I don’t think we will return.”

About: Sol Toro Tequila Grill
“My husband and some friends just took me to SolToro Tequila Grill at Mohegan Sun for my 40th and we loved it! The guacamole and salsas were out of this world. Does anyone know the recipes??!! I hate store bought salsa and never even liked guacamole until I had this. For anyone wanting to know - we also had the chicken fahitas, shrimp fahitas and chicken burritos - all excellent. The Patron Margaritas were also delicious. They ordered me a chocolate cake that does not look to be on the menu, but it was unbelievable and it was on the house (decorated with my picture and all!). This place was a lot of fun and the servers were very accomodating. I love Mexican food and this restaurant is the best mexican restaurant I have ever been to. I HIGHLY recommend it. Please respond if you have any idea about the salsas and guacamole. Thanks!”
