Ruffin says expect few changes at Treasure Island

San Francisco Chronicle, Sunday, December 28, 2008 at 5:16:26 PM

Kansas businessman Phil Ruffin says he expects few changes among the employees of Treasure Island on the Las Vegas Strip after his $775 million purchase.

Ruffin says he plans to keep management at the casino-hotel intact, as well as its Cirque du Soleil and pirate shows. He also says the move won't affect the resort's 3,200 employees, including their seniority, benefits and retirement.

Ruffin, who bought the casino from MGM Mirage in a deal announced earlier this month, says he is not planning to buy any more properties unless credit markets open up. He says he does not want to take on too much debt, but would be willing to take a mortgage on Treasure Island if borrowing rates get better. the rest

About: Isla
“We arrived at Isla at 7:30 to find a virtually empty restaurant, on a Saturday night mind you. Service at Isla was good, fish tacos, chips & salsa were fresh and fajitas were also good. We washed it all down with raspberry margaritas. I told our server it was my Momís birthday and she told me that they no longer give out desserts for birthdays, which I thought was a sting. I am sure Phil had something to do with that.”

“All the gloom and doom comments about how Phil is ruining this once decent property are true. It's becoming what I like to call a dump! For starters, the invited guest line had 1 person manning it, and with only 1 couple ahead of us to check in I figured I would be outta there in 5-10 mins tops, WRONG! The guy behind the desk was so busy trying to build a relationship with this couple that he forgot he was in the service industry and other people were waiting. I walked into VIP check in and asked the gal behind the desk if she could do me a favor and check us in because it might be tomorrow before the other guy finishes with his 1 customer of the night. VIP was great, they allowed us to check in quickly.

TI rooms in a word are fine, comfy beds, plenty of towels, but the shower head was in need of repair, to at least caulk it back on to the wall. The metal fittings were coming away from the wall, and it looked shabby. We were on a high floor but still heard ambulance noises and did not sleep well.

Very disappointing visit.”

“TI has been a favorite destination for the wife and me for years, and the poker room is excellent. Small but busy, it features low buy-in holdem tourneys ($65) frequently during the day, and the staff is very helpful. Big thumbs up.”

“I played a couple of low-fee ($45, IIRC) holdem tournaments here a few months ago, and I enjoyed the intimate atmosphere (six tables in the first tourney, five in the second), and the dealers and staff were all first-rate. I bombed out on the first one just short of the final table (a real downer!), but placed third in the second tourney. All in all, the level of play there (and at that buy-in level) was what you'd expect, ie, many many gamblers, with a few tight players thrown in to keep you on your toes.”

“Was at TI recently for a two night stay in November and I really enjoyed it. The rooms have been recently upgraded with new comfortable beds/linens and flat screen tv's. Had lunch at the buffet which is much improved from before including sushi, italian cooking station, salads, etc. Dessert section was not as large as other buffets, but the entrees made up for it. Also had dinner at Isla which was good and the service was above-average. Gaming choices are still very plentiful and the drink service is great. TI is a an excellent choice for anyone wanting a mid strip location, close to Wynn, Fashion Show Mall and The Mirage. Very reasonable rates too.”
