Bay Meadows bids farewell to Bay Area

San Francisco Chronicle,  Monday, May 12, 2008 at 11:17:36 AM

It was like old times at Bay Meadows racetrack Sunday as bugles blared, the crowd roared and hooves thundered amid a haze of nostalgia and cigar smoke.

Old-timers, children and quite a few mothers packed the grandstands on Mother's Day to watch the ponies on the last day of the fabled San Mateo racetrack's last regular season.

"I've been coming to the track for 34 years. There's a lot of good memories here," said Hershell Prevatt, 53, of Castro Valley, as he scanned the horses on their way to the gate on a brilliantly sunny, but breezy day. "I never thought it would come to this. I'm going to miss the atmosphere."

Bay Meadows, which opened in 1934 and hosted some of the greatest horses in history, including the legendary Seabiscuit, is scheduled to be torn down and the 83 acres will be turned into a home and office complex. the source

Poker is believed to have evolved from 'As Nas', a 25-card, five-suited game played in 16th century Persia.
