Commission approves arena, casino plans

Adamant and sometimes angry protests didn't stop the Pittsburgh Planning Commission from voting to approve controversial plans for the Penguins' hockey arena and Majestic Star Casino.

Separately, the Planning Commission voted unanimously to approve the shell design of the $450 million Majestic Star Casino over the objections of representatives from the Riverlife Task Force, a nonprofit that has argued the casino's towering garage will ruin the look of the North Shore along the Ohio River.
The 119-foot garage would have 3,800 spaces and be twice the size of the 60-foot casino just west of the Carnegie Science Center.
The eight-member commission voted 5-3 in favor of the Penguins' plan for the 18,000-seat arena, a move that brought boos and shouts from members of the One Hill Coalition, a group of Hill residents, labor union members and business owners that has threatened to picket the arena construction site if a community agreement isn't signed.
