County finally approves slots

Arundel Mills mall is on track for the largest and most lucrative casino in Maryland.
The proposal for a 200,000 square-foot entertainment complex to house 4,750 slot machines cleared a major hurdle yesterday as County Executive John R. Leopold signed into law a zoning bill to allow the casino, one day after the County Council ended 10 months of discussions and voted 4-2 to pass two competing zoning bills - one that paves the way for a 4,750-slot machine casino at the mall and another that forbids it.
Leopold vetoed the second bill that would have restricted casinos to a two-mile wide swath south of Route 32, an area that included Laurel Park race track but excluded the mall.
