Effects of casino deal disputed

A proposal to remove Sumner County from the areas eligible for a new destination casino could cost six south-central counties gaming revenues, a House member from the county contends.
State Rep. Vince Wetta, D-Wellington, said if Sumner County doesn't have the chance to compete with Sedgwick County for the tourist attraction, it's unlikely that Sedgwick officials would seek to build one.
The county already has the chance to add slots at Wichita Greyhound Park, so Wetta said he doesn't see much incentive for a casino unless neighboring Sumner County is trying to land one.
"The only problem is that if you take Sumner County off the bill, you take out the only reason for Sedgwick County to have a casino," Wetta said. "If you take Sumner County out of this bill, there will never be a casino built in Sumner County, there will be no casino in south-central Kansas and there will be no revenue sharing."
