Gov. urges debate on doomed casino bill

Massachusetts--Gov. Deval Patrick today challenged House Speaker Sal DiMasi to allow open debate on his near-dead resort casino bill and stop exerting "undue pressure" on lawmakers who are caught in the middle of the bitter political war over gaming expansion.
"I have no illusions about the plans in the House for this legislation," Patrick told a legislative panel today, all but conceding the bill's likely defeat. "But I am here anyway, because what you do in this committee will determine whether that full and open debate is possible."
The committee's chairman, State Rep. Daniel Bosley, cast aside the governor's allegations, saying lawmakers will allow a fair debate before the full House even if his committee gives the bill an unfavorable recommendation.
