The Skokomish Nation's Lucky Dog Casino, located on U.S. Highway 101 about 10 miles north of Shelton, celebrated its grand reopening last month after being closed down for 10 months.
Citing the economic recession, the casino posted a "closed for winter" message on its outdoor electronic signboard almost a year ago. The sudden closure surprised Mason County residents and resulted in the loss of 120 jobs.
The casino hosted a job fair prior to the July 15 reopening that attracted 400 applicants for 50 jobs, according to Janelle Rutter, marketing coordinator. "The Lucky Dog Casino currently has 53 employees: 33 are full time and 17 are part time," she said. "The Lucky Dog Casino is proud to report that 35 (66 percent) of these employees reside within Mason County while five (10 percent) are from the Skokomish Nation."
