N.J. denies license for Tropicana

Irked by massive layoffs, cleanliness problems, customer service complaints and violation of state regulations by the new owner of the Tropicana Casino and Resort, the New Jersey Casino Control Commission refused to grant it a new license.
The move marked only the second time in the 29-year history of legalized gambling in New Jersey that the commission has denied a license renewal, and it would force Columbia Sussex to sell the property, which includes New Jersey's largest hotel, unless it is blocked by an appeals court. A company lawyer said an appeal would be filed.
The casino and the hotel will stay open under the supervision of a retired state Supreme Court justice, Gary Stein.
