Ohio voters OK casinos
Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at 12:59:54 AM
Barring counting errors, the voters of Ohio have said "yes" to casinos in their state.
With 98% of the state's precincts reporting, the votes favored Issue 3 by 53%, allowing for one casino each in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo.
The vote marks the last of hotly-contested casino initiatives that have been on Ohio ballots five times during the past 20 years, and--until today--have gone down in defeat.
Proponents of Issue 3 say its passage will mean 34,000 new jobs for Ohio, and that the four new casinos would generate $11 billion in five years. Ohio's unemployment rate stands currently at over 10%.
Companies backing Issue 3 include Penn National Gaming and MTR Gaming Inc. Both companies already own horse race tracks in Ohio.
