Port Huron's casino passes its first test

Port Huron's casino bid is far from done, but supporters have good reason to savor this week's victory. In a surprising 21-5 vote Wednesday, the Natural Resources Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives gave its approval to legislation to create an Indian-run gambling facility in Port Huron.
It was a promising first step, one worth savoring. Congress often moves slowly, and there still is a long way to go.
The bill now is eligible for a House vote, but when that will happen is difficult to predict. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., will make that decision. The Senate also must pass similar legislation. So far, a similar bill has not yet been introduced.
