Racine Elks Lodge to hire security for next bingo event

Journal-Times,  Monday, December 21, 2009 at 1:07:17 AM

After a weekend robbery, the Racine Elks Lodge plans to have armed security at its next bingo event, the organization's leader said Sunday.

Two armed men robbed a man outside the hall, 5844 Douglas Ave., on Saturday night, then barged in during a bingo game and took an estimated $368, according to police. The head of the Elks group, Sarah Despins, isn't sure yet what form that security will take but said she's determined to protect volunteers and players.

The games' proceeds are put toward social events for veterans, dictionaries for third-grade students, college scholarships and other community activities.

"That's our main source of income, so if we lose bingo we'll pretty much be gone," Despins said. the source
