Rincon tribe wins slot suit against state

San Diego Union-Tribune,  Monday, March 29, 2010 at 12:28:25 PM

The Rincon Indian band has won a federal lawsuit against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger over the number of slot machines it should be able to have at its Harrah's casino in North County.

Magistrate Judge William McCurine ruled this week that the statewide limit under compacts signed in 1999 should be nearly 56,000. That's 14,000 more slots than a Sacramento judge last year said the state should permit, and 24,000 more than the state thinks is right.

The dispute is one of a string of losses on the issue for Schwarzenegger, who was elected vowing to make sure that tribes with casinos "pay their share" into the state's budget, and then used the scarcity of casino licenses as a bargaining tool.
