Supervisors ask for AG opinion on gambling vote

The Jackson County Board of Supervisors formally asked Friday for Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood's legal opinion on whether or not the county can hold a non-binding referendum on gaming.
Supervisor Manly Barton said Saturday supervisors decided earlier they would seek Hood's opinion if local-private legislation to allow the vote pending in the Mississippi Legislature did not appear likely to pass. He said the county's legal counsel, Paula Yancey, had prepared the letter asking for the opinion, but had not sent it out.
