Tribe bets future of casino project on settlement in lawsuit

A court settlement last year that involved the Fort Sill Apache Tribe of Oklahoma could prove to be the linchpin that determines whether the tribe is eventually able to conduct gaming in Luna County.
Tribal officials have said they believe the agreement gives them legal grounds to open a casino off Interstate 10 east of Deming.
The casino has prompted controversy in recent days because of a pledge by Gov. Bill Richardson to block access to the facility using law enforcement should the tribe try to open it.
