Tribes push casino deals

Only last summer, Barstow's hope for economic salvation through Indian gambling was considered all but dead.
But like a determined gambler regrouping for one last shot at the big jackpot, a diverse political coalition turned out Wednesday to urge state lawmakers to permit two impoverished tribes from far reaches of California to build casinos in the struggling Mojave Desert town.
Representatives for the Big Lagoon Rancheria in Humboldt County and the Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeño Indians in San Diego County were joined at a Capitol news conference by Barstow City Council members, environmentalists, union activists and three lawmakers.
