Watchdog group questions legality of casino funding

A government watchdog group claims three casino projects vying to operate in Wyandotte County should be eliminated because each would benefit from public funds in violation of state law.
State officials are taking the issue seriously. Kansas Lottery director Ed VanPetten said Monday his office will ask the Kansas attorney general to issue a formal opinion.
Topeka-based Americans for Prosperity-Kansas said Monday that three of the six pending casino proposals in Kansas City, Kan., from Pinnacle Entertainment, Legends Sun, and a partnership of Kansas Speedway and the Cordish Co. are too closely affiliated with and would benefit from prior tax increment financing or state-approved STAR bond projects.
