MGM Mirage to sell Borgata stake

Wall Street Journal,  Friday, March 12, 2010 at 11:06:35 AM

MGM Mirage will sell its 50% stake in the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, as widely expected, in a settlement with New Jersey gambling regulators.

Shares rose 1.4% in early trading to $11.83 while Borgata partner Boyd Gaming Corp. climbed 1.4% to $8.72.

The regulators had raised concerns about the suitability of MGM Mirage's business partner in Macau. Chairman and Chief Executive Jim Murren reiterated Friday that the casino operator disagrees with the New Jersey regulators. He said other regulators have determined the relationship with Pansy Ho is appropriate or decided further action isn't required.

MGM Mirage disclosed last year that New Jersey's Division of Gaming Enforcement had issued a confidential report saying the company should disassociate from Ho, the company's joint venture partner in Macau. It labeled her an "unsuitable" business partner. the source

'Weight Program' lawsuit against Borgata Hotel settles out of court

UPI,  Friday, August 1, 2008 at 8:19:15 PM

Atlantic City--A lawsuit brought against an Atlantic City, N.J., casino by former cocktail servers who objected to a mandatory weight program has been settled out of court.

The $70 million lawsuit against Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa was settled before it could go to trial, but the details of the settlement were not released, the Press of Atlantic City reported Thursday.

However, the settlement allows Borgata to continue its controversial policy that allows for cocktail servers to be fired if they gain more than 7 percent of their body weight. The policy is being challenged in an unrelated suit by a casino labor union. the source

Stinky gambler fuming over casino ejection

Associated Press,  Friday, August 1, 2008 at 8:14:27 PM

Atlantic City--Yes, Michael Wax stunk. He's the first to admit it. The 440-pound Brooklyn man said he was playing poker in an Atlantic City casino for 17 hours Tuesday and didn't have time to clean up. He understands why grossed-out gamblers complained about his body odor, but said he didn't deserve stinky treatment from the casino that asked him to leave.

Dave Coskey, a spokesman for the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, said it is company policy not to comment on matters involving their customers.

Wax said he told casino officials: "There's no question I stink. I'm not denying it. I do have an odor. I've been playing for 17 hours." the source

Fight over jeans leads to casino jackpot

Associated Press,  Friday, January 25, 2008 at 2:33:33 PM

All week, Sammy Zabib was getting an earful from his girlfriend for forgetting to buy her a pair of designer jeans she spotted in a casino boutique last weekend.

"She was mad," said Zabib, a 42-year-old limousine fleet manager in New York. "We had an argument. More than one."

They're not arguing now.

On a return trip to pick up the jeans and end the grief Friday morning, Zabib won nearly $800,000 playing a slot machine.

He got up at 5 a.m. and drove three hours to Atlantic City, arriving at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa before the boutique, Whim, opened at 10 a.m. the source
