Raton to build casino, horse racing track

A new era of horse racing in Raton, N.M., is bearing in, full speed, with a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for a $50 million casino and horse racing track, expected to open next year.
The event is scheduled from noon until 1 p.m. at Ripley Park, consisting of an "Appreciation Pic-Nic" highlighted by a visit by New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and presentation of a proclamation honoring the Kentucky Derby winning horse, Mine That Bird.
Town officials said Monday that after the presentation, a cavalcade of project partners will travel down Second Street to the future home of the racetrack and casino for a formal groundbreaking at the site.
