The palm-tree-lined road to The Oasis is dark and quiet this weekend.
VictoryLand and its adjacent 300-room hotel, The Oasis, along with many of the bingo operations across the state, have closed as the legal battle over bingo continues to brew and lawyers look for ways to get the casinos back open without risk of a raid by Gov. Bob Riley's Task Force on Illegal Gambling.
On a typical weekend night, the Interstate 85 exit leading to VictoryLand is bustling with casino traffic. This weekend, VictoryLand buses normally used to ferry gamblers across the expansive parking lot were used to block the entrance to the bingo casino and hotel.
"I don't know when it will open," VictoryLand owner Milton McGregor said Saturday. "But I do know this. We will reopen. And when we reopen we're going to open bigger and better than we were."
