Viejas Casino reached a major milestone today, with the opening of a new high-stakes, high tech Bingo Room. Tribal elders, tribal leaders, local dignitaries, Chamber of Commerce representatives and the public all joined in the Grand Opening of the new Bingo Room. The ceremonies included a Tribal Blessing, traditional Native American Bird Songs and a ribbon cutting.

The first Viejas Bingo facility opened in 1977 at the Ma Tar Awa RV Park on the Viejas Reservation. In 1994, Viejas Bingo was moved to a location inside the Viejas Casino building, and in 2000 a new structure was built on the east side of Viejas Casino to house the growing bingo operation. That structure will be demolished to make way for the new hotel at Viejas Casino, which will include over 120 rooms, a pool and Jacuzzi area, and other amenities.

The 47-story boardwalk newcomer will house a 150,000-square-foot casino plus three pools, a rooftop garden, a burlesque stage, a 31,000-square-foot spa and restaurants run by the chefs Marc Forgione, Jose Garces and Michel Richard.

A Guinness World Records adjudicator is scheduled to be on-hand as Pechanga Resort & Casino and Bally Technologies attempt to make history and enter the record books by holding The World's Largest Slot Machine Tournament on February 11. The event is free and everyone over 21 years of age is welcome to try and win their share of $100,000 in prizes.

"This tournament reflects our commitment to operating the best casino in the world," said Pechanga Development Corporation President Joaquin Fletcher. "Since the resort opened in 2002, Pechanga has worked to create one of the most technologically advanced slot floors anywhere, and setting this world record highlights the enormous advantages Pechanga's casino has to offer."

More than 1,000 machines on Pechanga's floor will utilize Bally's unique technology to turn them into tournament machines and allow a player on each to compete head to head with 1,000 other players at the exact same time. The frenzied rush of slot tournament players furiously spinning their machine to rack up their score, trying to place in the tournament, will be a casino-wide phenomenon, for the first time in history.

"This is a milestone in casino promotions," explained Pechanga Vice President of Marketing Lee Torres. "Most promotions and tournaments are located in one area, but this tournament will electrify the entire casino floor. This is our way to show the world what you can do with the most technologically advanced slot floor on the planet in one of the largest casinos on Earth."

Casino's second floor opens to public

Resorts World Casino New York City President Michael Speller glanced over the railing in the casino's second floor Liberty Bar down to the stage at Bar360; his arms behind his back, his expression a mix of relief and excitement. Behind him, workers carried ladders across the freshly-laid carpet, eyeing the light fixtures to make sure each is working properly while workers test the remaining video lottery terminals.

A decade after casino gambling was authorized at Aqueduct Racetrack, 14 months after ground broke on the site, and seven weeks after the first bets were placed in the 2,280 VLTs on the casino's first floor, the second and third floors of the complex, including two restaurants and 70,000 square feet of event space, opened to the public at 1 p.m. on Dec. 16.

The second floor, called the Fifth Avenue Casino, is designed to be more sophisticated and geared toward those who are serious gamers, Speller explained. He described it as "more conservative looking" and "aimed to capture the attention of those going out of state for their gaming experience." The spaces between the slot machines are wider and many of the games have higher limits.

As the minutes counted down to 10 a.m. Saturday, Nate Wheatley was among the dealers, managers and other employees meticulously preparing for the opening of the Oak Tree Casino, a new cardroom that's the latest addition to the landmark restaurant just off Interstate 5 in Woodland. Even before the first player walked through the door, there was no shortage of optimism in the room.

"I'm hoping to fill this place every day," McCormick said, "but nothing comes easy."
