Harrahs CEO: Economy is changing casinos
International Herald-Tribune, Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 4:19:22 PM
Executives at top casino companies said Wednesday that the gambling business won't be the same for years to come as game makers and casino owners shift focus to properties that already exist from casinos still being planned.

"One of the challenges that has plagued the casino industry for a long time is that we spend money like drunken sailors," said Gary Loveman, chairman and chief executive of Harrah's Entertainment Inc. "I think the industry is going to have to get accustomed to the notion that not every project is a good project -- and $1 billion is a lot of money, after all."

Loveman told other casino operators at an industry conference that Harrah's, its competitors and other businesses may have to change how they work -- particularly how they finance development -- for the rest of his professional life.

Clark Stewart, president of Butler National, told the Daily Globe that despite other companies backing down, his company was moving forward.

"I believe the only real thing we have to say is we still plan to go forward," he said. "That's the key item out of all of this."

Pittsburgh casino to get new name
Pittsburgh Business Times, Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 6:56:26 PM
Pittsburgh's casino may still be majestic, but that won't be reflected in its name.

The new preliminary name presented to the city Planning Commission Tuesday by representatives of casino developer Holdings Acquisition Co. L.P. is "Rivers Casino."

"We selected the name because it reflects the integral role the rivers have had in shaping Pittsburgh's history and character," spokesman Dan Fee said in a statement. "We believe our location and development along the Ohio River is as unique as Pittsburgh."

Majestic Star was awarded the contract to build a casino on Pittsburgh's North Shore in December 2006, but Don Barden, the company chairman and CEO, defaulted on a $200 million bridge loan in July and failed to pay contractors.

Thousands enjoy Fire Rock VIP night
Gallup Independent, Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 12:46:46 PM
With the Navajo Nation's first casino set to open its doors to the public on Wednesday, VIPs flocked to a special preview of the Fire Rock Casino Sunday evening where they were treated to cuisine from the casino's restaurants and had the opportunity to try out slots, bingo and table games.

Hundreds of invited guests and officials came out to get a glimpse inside the brand new casino, and the consensus seemed to be they were very impressed with it. The casino features slot machines, table games, a poker room, a 406-person capacity bingo hall, a restaurant and two fast food options.

The theme of the casino is the Four Sacred Mountains with renditions of the mountains in the appropriate directions. The entrance is to the east and a fire is in the center of the facility, such as in a traditional Navajo home.

Wichita Bisuiness Journal, Monday, November 17, 2008 at 9:24:20 PM
Harrah's Gaming says it won't build its planned $500 million casino and resort near Mulvane, the Kansas Lottery said Monday.

In a news release, the lottery says a representative from the casino development company informed the agency of its decision this afternoon in a letter.

Jeffrey Ungerer, of Sumner Gaming Joint Venture, wrote: "We truly regret that we must withdraw our gaming application as a result of circumstances beyond our control that do not permit us to meet the proposed schedule for the project. In the event the financial climate improves, we may be interested in reapplying for a gaming license should the process in the South Central zone be reopened for bids."
